All about Etsy
There are lots of small changes you can make in Etsy that could have some fairly big changes to your sales – we wanted to research all we could do to put our best foot forward!
Photography
Shopping online is full of risks – therefore you want to minimise these risks for your buyers. Be clear and transparent about what they will be buying. Include product shots from as many angles as possible, and update these shots regularly.
It may be worth getting a professional photographer to shoot lifestyle shots of all your work, alongside product shots. You want to sell a lifestyle as much as a product!
Keywords
Use the google keywords tool to ensure that you pick the right words to get your searches known. It is best to target a niche market rather than optimising for larger volumes.
Try searching for your own items on Etsy – do they show up? Make note of the variations that appear when you start your search, could these be your alternative keywords?
Use the Search Ads (under detail) to figure out which of your keywords aren’t working for you, and then drop them. Etsy have very kindly published a list of all keywords
Etsy is big in America, so make sure you include the American word as well as the British, for example; fire engine/truck.
Renewing
Renewing items cost 20c – and it is perhaps one of the best ways to ensure your items get seen. Do plan this cost in when you are pricing your products. Some people renew 6 times a day! Before you renew, rewrite your descriptions. Do this a couple of times per month, give your audience a reason to need your item.
Think about timing when you renew your items. America is Etsy’s biggest audience, and you will want to target the Etsy ‘rush hours’ – 8am and 6pm. Therefore, if you are a UK Etsy seller, think about renewing your products at 1pm (GMT) till 4pm (GMT) for the pre work Etsy rush (from Florida to California) and 11pm (GMT) till 2am (GMT) for the post work Etsy rush!
Get Involved in the Etsy Community
Compile treasury lists – the community will better understand your style; be inspired; and if you pop one or two of your own items, you will do a bit of advertising too!
On the home page, there are a few discovery sections – at present they are; Fashion, Home & Garden, Kids and Spring Celebrations. Click ‘Fashion’ and you will see what Etsy is currently promoting – Chevron stripes? Do you have any products that will match that category? If you do, why not rename them to increase the chance of being displayed, and then renew! Etsy has a great blog, have a look around, and be sure to comment, the more involved you become in the community the more Etsy users will want to find out about the work behind the voice.
Your Brand on Etsy
Make sure you fill out your entire profile, and you have a full shop! Nobody wants to enter a shop with just 3 items. The shops that sell the most stock have a definite feel – their stock is not too broad, but they do stock plenty. You want to ensure that your shop is followed by as many people as possible.
Tell stories, do any of your items have an interesting back story? Welcome people into your shop, be clear about the products you sell, and proofread!
Link your Etsy shop to your Facebook pages and Twitter account, and follow @EtsyFinds on twitter to be found – you want your shop to be found in as many places as possible.
Good luck, and happy selling!
